The Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) today extended its sensitization campaign to Mzuzu, Chikwawa, Mulanje and Mwanza with an aim of enhancing awareness among secondary school cluster leaders about the availability of student loans and ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder access to higher education.
In Mzuzu, cluster leaders from Mzuzu Government and Katoto Secondary Schools convened at Katoto Secondary School.
Speaking on behalf of the other cluster leaders, Katoto Secondary School Headteacher, Mike Nyemba welcomed the idea of a working partnership between the Board and Head teachers.
He pointed out that it is high time that secondary school teachers participate and take a pivotal role in higher education financing.
As hosts for prospective higher education students, secondary school teachers should play a role in disseminatingng the availability of the loan facility at the Board. Therefore, we are glad that the Board has finally recognised teachers as a crucial partner He said.
Mzuzu Government Secondary School Head Teacher, George Chunga expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying the partnership is an effective way to empower secondary school students with information so that they are well aware of the higher education financing.
Addressing the teachers in Mzuzu, the Boards Loans and Grants Disbursement Manager, Abels Tembo urged cluster leaders to relay the message to the teachers in their clusters and to use other fora including morning assemblies, football matches and Teacher and Parents meetings to create awareness about students loans.
