The Executive Director of the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB), Mr. Prince Phwetekere, has been elected Vice President of the Association of African Higher Education Financing Agencies (AAHEFA) during its 2024 Annual General Meeting in Tanzania.
AAHEFA is a continental entity established in 2008 to unite institutions across Africa involved in providing loans, bursaries, grants, and scholarships to higher education students, as well as managing loan recoveries. The organization is formally registered in Tanzania, where its headquarters are located.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Phwetekere expressed gratitude,stating, I am proud that HESLGB is represented at the highest decision-making level of this continental Higher Education Financing Association. This platform provides opportunities for financing agencies to learn lessons and explore innovative strategies for managing student loans.
Currently, 13 African countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Botswana, and South Africa have implemented student loan schemes to support higher education financing.
