The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Jessie Kabwila, has urged the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) to ensure that all eligible and needy students who apply for loans receive due consideration.
Speaking during her visit to HESLGB offices, Dr. Kabwila emphasized the need for the board to extend its support to all applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, including vulnerable students and those with disabilities.
“Our request to HESLGB is to provide loans to all students who apply and meet the requirements. I, therefore, urge students to take advantage of this opportunity by applying once the loan application window opens and ensuring they follow all instructions,” she said.
She further stressed the importance of inclusivity and fairness in promoting access to higher education for all deserving students, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that higher education is accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status, tribe, or political affiliation.
Dr. Kabwila also commended HESLGB for its critical role in supporting students across the country.
“I am very impressed with the board’s efforts in ensuring that students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds have access to higher education. The current loan cycle, which has supported 29,000 needy students, is a testament to this work. This initiative will help bridge the gap between the rich and the poor,” she noted.
HESLGB Executive Director, Prince Phwetekere, expressed gratitude for the minister’s visit, describing it as a milestone for the board.
“We are honored to welcome the first-ever Minister of Higher Education to our offices. This visit demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to supporting the board and recognizing our role in advancing the government’s development agenda. We will continue working tirelessly to help needy and deserving students access higher education,” he said.
